My opinion in the Value Added Tax in Philippines

I may be too young to clearly understand the process of taxation in our government or to understand what the government want or planned for the future of our country. But I believe that I'm not banned as a youth to give my point of view with regards to the things that gives concerns to all my countrymen and to my country.
Last night my favorite radio program the "brew rats”, 99.5RT has a very interesting topic for their educational Monday. They invited the dakila people (a group of students) and some people to discuss about the value added tax (VAT) in the Philippines. It may be too late to discuss it because it was implemented a long time ago (3 or 4 years ago), but the topic may also be timely because of the world's financial crisis happening today. I heard different opinions from the hosts, their guest and different people who texted and called the show last night. I really enjoyed their opinions and suggestions.
12% - the figure that almost all Filipino will say about the VAT. Most of the products and services increased its price by 12% and the income of the government also increased. Some says that the VAT is good for the Philippines. Some says that it adds more burdens to the Filipino people. Some says that best way to do is to remove it to lower the price of products and services.
In my own opinion VAT is GOOD. The VAT will strengthen the Philippine economy by giving it a stronger financial foundation. The government will have more money to spend for their projects such as building of different public structures like schools, hospitals, bridges and roads that will uplift the Philippines’s physical image. The government can also give more social services and support to the public especially to the poor.
But why most Filipino doesn’t like VAT if its purpose is to bring a lot of positive effects to our country?
Here are my opinions why:
Probably, most of us will think that most people in the government are corrupt and the additional income of the government from VAT will be an additional income for these corrupt individuals. They may be correct because the Philippines according to the surveys is one of the most corrupt country. Some people will use the government fund for their own benefits. The Corruption in the Philippines is so hard to remove, many have tried but no one succeed. Most People know that VAT has a lot of positive effects but they also know that VAT may trigger more and more corruptions.
Probably, most Filipino doesn't like VAT because the price of the products and services increases and their low salaries can no longer sustain their needs. This may also be true. Most people are suffering from the high prices of products and services. Some were starving because they can no longer afford to buy food. In reality not everyone can be a manager of a company or a rich businessman to sustain their needs and wants, in fact most Filipino were just minimum wage earners that’s why most Filipino were affected. Some suggested increasing the salary so that we can sustain our basic commodities. Some suggested to remove VAT so that the price of the products will decrease but the government disagreed and I also disagree because the VAT will serve as the savior of the Philippine economy and the poor sector of the society, if we remove it the government will run out of fund to support its projects and developments for our benefits.
Probably, most Filipino are not opening their eyes to the benefits of the VAT because their mind were influenced by some people who says that VAT is not good and will just make the Philippines worst.
In conclusion, I believe that the Value Added Tax is GOOD for the Philippine economy and also for the Filipino people IF and only IF the government will use it right and will not be corrupt.
